A Brief History
On Jan 1st 2004 our countries two Scouting Organisations (C.S.I. and S. A I.) Merged into a
new single body to be known as Scouting Ireland. The Scouting Association of Ireland was
founded in 1908 and the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland started in 1925 and were officially
recognised as CBSI in 1927.
The Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland arrived in Dun Laoghaire in 1931. The Group was, for many
years, housed in what had previously been a small dwelling/house at 52 Patrick St, an
address at which we still remain to this day. However by the mid 1960’s, the original building
was considered to be no longer suitable for our needs.
We moved to the Parish Hall on Suffolk St , while our families’, friends and supporters began
a fundraising campaign over the next few years to build a new Den. The old house and
outbuildings were demolished to allow for the construction of a new purpose built Den which
was completed in 1977 and opened by an Taoisach, Liam Cosgrave.
In fact Mr Cosgrave gave his final speech as Taoiseach from the front door to our new Den.
This year we celebrate eighty years of scouting in Dun Laoghaire and, with many memories
of our achievements and all the people that have passed through our walls over those years.
We look back with gratuities and pride and look forward to the next 80 years
